Jain Society of Metropolitan Washington

On November 1st, 2020, the Jain Society of Metropolitan Washington (JSMW) celebrated an event that marked the beginning of the construction of their new Jain temple in Beltsville, Maryland. This amazing landmark near the nation’s capital will be built with white marble on a 5.5-acre land and will be a place of worship grounded with the principles of non-violence for hundreds of Jain families in Maryland, Northern Virginia, and the Washington DC region.

This construction event, named Shubharambh (auspicious beginning), was an online event attended by 500 people from the local community and around the world. Shubharambh was conducted under the guidance and blessings of skilled Vidhikar Shri Narendrabhai Nandu with religious hymns and live music from Mumbai, India. During the event, JSMW members and guests donated and pledged over $300,000 in just one hour!

JSMW’s goal is to increase awareness of Jain principles, inculcate Jain values in future generations, achieve unity between Jains sects, and promote inter-faith understanding. The 30,000 sq. ft. Jain Center will be a single large complex with places of worship for multiple Jain sects and an educational & social wing that will offer a library, classrooms, and a community center.

The Jain Center will be located at 4241 Ammendale Road, Beltsville, Maryland, and is projected to complete in 2 years.
125th Anniversary of Shri Atmasiddhi Shastra
On the auspicious day of Asho Vad Ekam (November 1, 2020), we commenced the 125th year of Shri Atmasiddhi Shastra. Shrimad Rajchandraji had written Shri Atmasiddhi Shastra for the spiritual upliftment of a multitude of souls aiming at Self-Realization. The succinct and accurate composition is a masterpiece in the philosophical literature, where, through simple questions and answers, Shrimad explains the quintessence of Jainism.

Following a request from Shri Saubhagbhai of Sayla, Shrimad Rajchandra composed the great Atmasiddhi Shastra in Nadiad, Gujarat. The 142 verses emerged in one sitting of less than 2 hours. This composition explains the Jain path to Moksha. Besides being highly spiritual, it is also a classic of Gujarati literature and has been the subject of numerous translations, commentaries and is also studied at universities for doctorates in philosophy even today.

The Story Behind Atmasiddhi Shastra

Shrimad had sent a copy of the letter on 'The Six Spiritual Tenets' to Shri Saubhagbhai with an instruction to learn it by heart and to contemplate its contents regularly. Due to old age, Saubhagbhai found it difficult to memorize the prose form of the letter and requested Shrimad to re-write the letter in rhythmic verse form so that he could easily memorize it and make it a part of himself.

During Bhadarva and Aso months of Vikram Samvat 1952, Shrimad spent his time in the jungles of Gujarat contemplating in solitude. From there he came to the town of Nadiad where a great event took place on the first day of the latter half of the Aso month. When Shrimad returned from his day's outing at dusk, he called on Ambalalbhai: "Ambalal, light and hold a lantern".

Ambalalbhai, a great Truth seeker, humble as ever did as asked and stood by Shrimad's side with a lit lantern. Shrimad sat and started writing. A miraculous stream of inspiration full of profound spiritual insight began to flow. His sublime spiritual state became his pen and the essence of his profound thinking became his ink. He began to compose verses with the potency to awaken slumbering souls and the 142 verses emerged in one sitting of less than 2 hours. This composition is what explains the Jain path to Moksha.
